Hi all, not been on for a while and apologies if this has already been covered recently. I went to a BG induction/assessment morning a few weeks back and got through the first stage. I've now been invited to go to their academy in Thatcham for two weeks further assessment and training. Put up in a hotel etc expenses paid. This is on a self employed basis as a service & breakdown engineer which is all I pretty much get involved with now. Anybody else done this or booked in for it?
Cheers

Knew someone that did it recons it was ok, when he started he used there van, did quite well for about 18mths then they laid him off, trouble was during that time he had lost all his own private customers, so had to struggle to find work

Was he expected to sell boiler changes while he was with them? This is my main concern as I'm not a salesperson but have heard BG are keen on their engineers to push the sale of new boilers?

all engineers are expected to sell irrelevant of employment status.

Not too impressed with BG an engineer who went to a property I do work at, said the old lady needed a new boiler. As her flue was at risk. She asked me to quote. What was the problem I hear you ask? Not a problem with the boiler, I checked just a terminal guard badly rusted. New guard fetched and fitted in an hour. I wont give quotes when not required. Come on BG.

Guy I know from my local watering hole works for BG and I asked him about pushing for the powerflush and new boiler thing. He flatly denies it and said sometimes & sometimes not it all depends on what is there and the condition of the boiler and the water.
I tend to believe him but maybe he`s a good apple in the large barrel.

Yah I get these offers from time to time. Random guy with a cold call offering delicious fluffy clouds in vanilla serbet. You work for some shady bunch connected to BG, but not directly with them, because probably this works out the best for all (but you). BG doesnt have to provide you with anything, treat you as self employed (which otherwise they couldnt do), and while the guys directly under their umbrella are shooting the sht and getting paid decent moneys, you run around and do 6-8 breakdowns a day. You get 45 GBP/breakdown. This is what they expect of you.
I know from experience this isnt possible where I live, because driving from one address to the other can take easily 30-45 min. That leaves you with 15-30 minutes to park the van, go to the door, get to the boiler, take cover off, diagnose fault and repair. Within 30 minutes you must be on your way to your next job, otherwise you wont do 8/day.
I had gas safe guys come to fix my boiler, before I was gas safe. Took them (2 guys came, one BG employee) an afternoon to make sure the fault was correctly diagnosed, and boiler only worked on the 3rd day when the part came in (fan). 1 hour then to remove the old one and fit new one, thats in and out the door basically.
Others from BG came to upgrade my meter to smart meter, they were on it for at least 3 hours. Everything easily accesible under the stairs cupboard, big enough to comfortably work standing up, not crawlin on your knees and elbows.

I do not want to hear 6-8 breakdowns per day bullsht, I know its not possible. One day youll forget something important because always in a rush, and someone dies.
