Hi

Can anybody help me please. Hot water not working but central heating is. Bg has recommended a powerflush as the think there's a blockage. I went with an other opinion through my bank insurance and they have been twice first time they turned up they turned the pump up and it worked for a couple off days now it's back too cold again so they came round again and said the thought there was a problem with the hot water tank and says I would need to replace it or go to a combi boiler. Can anybody shine any light on this pleasd

1st are you in a hard water area ? hot water tank could be scaled up, did they check that all controls were working, does the heating work OK ? could be that although pump is making a noise its not doing anything, Can you post a photo of controls , you could have a faulty valve - thermostat or timer, don't go spending out until other things have been tested

Hi thanks for reply. Not in hard water area. The pipes coming from the boiler are roasting they then go under floors then up the kitchen wall into the cupboard where the hot water tank is that's where the pipes stop being hot i.e. Going into the tank. They tried bleeding all the pipes round that also.

This is where the hot stops

Looks like you have and old gravity hot water system, have you checked small tank in loft ? possible that it is empty, if not it could be a blockage in the cold water feed from small tank quite common on older systems.

Believe it or not bg or the other engineers haven't been up in the loft. The tap pressure seems to be ok. The pipes beside the boiler do sound as if it's struggling to circulate

Is there anybody in Edinburgh be able to check this for me quote etc please

Sounds like a circulation issue, as others have said, check F&E tank level and pump

Nothing to do with pressure in taps, you have 2 x tanks in loft the small one keeps heating & hot water pipes toped up with water, if small tank runs dry water level in pipes will drop causing problems with circulation if you are able to access loft just check that small tank has water in it , if not ball valve will be stuck , sometimes just moving it up & down will free it up, if not you will need a new ball valve.

Thanks for all your help on this. Got plumber coming today will mention about tanks in loft as nobody checked there yet

Photo is not showing up too well on my phone but what is that gate valve doing? Is it open?

Just had a look in the loft best I can definitely sounds like there is water in a big tank that's all I can see. Have attached video

Not the big tank No need to bother about that one, that is supplying water to your hot water tank, should be a small tank close by, maybe higher up than the big tank, are you able to get into the loft ? or don't you want to risk it ? (Age maybe)
Can you manage a photo of loft ? No video attached !!!

Don't have a ladder to get up there will attach best photo at the moment Thanks for your patience with this

I'd wait and borrow a decent set of steps and a head torch so once you're up there you can have a poke around but still have both hands free to support yourself, if in any doubt then don't go up there and wait for the plumber, not worth having an accident
