If so, how often do you find your replacement is compatible with the original?

Are there different brands that vary enough that having one of a each/a few raises chances of success a lot? If so which ones?

I change the lot as you've got to drain or bung it
 
If there is movement in the pipes, then no point trying to swap the works.
I do sometimes just swap the valve body and use the existing nuts and olives if the olive is not a bigger distance onto the pipes and if the nuts are identical threads (usually are) and also not corroded.
But to do a really good job I now replace them with lever valves if the customer deserves it or wants it
