A coal-fired power station or coal power plant is a thermal power station which burns coal to generate electricity. Worldwide there are about 8,500 coal-fired power stations totaling over 2,000 gigawatts capacity. They generate about a third of the world's electricity, but cause many illnesses and early deaths, mainly from air pollution.
A coal-fired power station is a type of fossil fuel power station. The coal is usually pulverized and then burned in a pulverized coal-fired boiler. The furnace heat converts boiler water to steam, which is then used to spin turbines that turn generators. Thus chemical energy stored in coal is converted successively into thermal energy, mechanical energy and, finally, electrical energy.
Coal-fired power stations emit over 10 Gt of carbon dioxide each year, about one fifth of world greenhouse gas emissions, so are the single largest cause of climate change. More than half of all the coal-fired electricity in the world is generated in China. In 2020 the total number of plants started falling as they are being retired in Europe and America although still being built in Asia, almost all in China. Some remain profitable because costs to other people due to the health and environmental impact of the coal industry are not priced into the cost of generation, but there is the risk newer plants may become stranded assets. The UN Secretary General has said that OECD countries should stop generating electricity from coal by 2030, and the rest of the world by 2040.
I've had an idea to use a gas fired generator running on mains gas to top up a large off grid battery bank when solar power is insufficient. Can anybody tell me if this is legal in the UK? Mains gas is much cheaper than electricity per kwh and the fact I've never heard of anybody doing the same...
My oil fired boiler won’t fire up it is in lockout
After a power cut my oil feeder is showing out of fuel- it isn’t. And now my boiler is in lockout and won’t fire.
It was working fine before the power cut.
Checked & no air in the system
Plumber thinks I need a new feeder but I’m unsure...
I'm new to oil fired boilers.
The first time I topped up my oil tank, I had the supplier organise the additive. From now on, I will buy my own additives. Is there any particular type the oil engineers on the forum would recommend? Heating only, no aga ect.
Hi all
We have a set of Fired Earth floor mounted taps with shower head attachment on our bath. Unfortunately I don’t know the model as they were installed before we moved in. The issue we are having as that the diverted between bath taps and shower head appears to have seized up and we are...
CH pump and diverter valve active when there is is no demand. I suspect relay 4 is sticking but don't know how to prove it. If I switch the heating on and off from the programmer it eventually stops.
I don't work now due to being ancient. I looked at a 'Range cooker' fired on kero. It had a slow leak that turned into a bad leak in a month!
It had a welded fabricated boiler. I've seen such heat exchangers leak within 7 years from new. No wonder the Potterton heating production manager said...

Hi,
Firstly, I am neither plumber nor heating engineer, just a willing diy, have a go guy.
I have a Grant 26 oil fired combi boiler which started continually leaking water from the prv to the outside. The pressure was at 1 bar until the heating system cut in, when it would increase to 2.5 and...
This is what it looks like. It has been inspected and it is still servicable just needs cleaning up and painting.
Yes, I know it's ancient and could do with replacing but so is the owner and funds are limited.
Has anyone in PF land got any idea of how the gauge works? Is it a float mechanism...
I am considering using an H2 panel to connect a woodburner stove with a back boiler to an oil fired rayburn. I have seen that serveral years ago there was some talk of the H2 panel but have been advised that using such a system is expensive to fit and not that efficient. Has anybody got any...
I am after advice about a heating system I am looking to put into a recently purchased house. Ideally I would like a multi fuel log burner something like a stovax Stockton 11 with a back boiler connected to an H2 control system and that connected to an oil fired rayburn 680K. I have sourced the...
My daughter wanted a quote for a replacement oil fired boiler. The heating engineer who she knows and trusts says that the existing tank is too close to the flue outlet and is not a double skin tank. He says that he is not allowed to replace the boiler unless she moves the position of the tank...
Hi,
I'm having problems with my oil fired central heating boiler. Its a Panda II with an Electro Oil burner fitted with a Danfoss oil pump. The problem- The burner fires up normally as per, and the flame is well established, however after seven minutes it flames out and then locks out after the...
Hi I have moved into a older semi bungalow it contains a Boulter 50/70 non condensing oil fired boiler the flue is illegal as far as I know being about 6" from the semi next door anfor about 6 " from ground level. Not only that the neighbours next door complained in the past about the smell so...

I've been servicing my own oil fired Rayburn for years without any problems. Immediately after my last service, a few days ago, it smelt really fumey, stank the whole house out. It also would have regular (what I call mini-explosions - it's not that dramatic, but I can't think of a better word...
Hoping someone can offer some advice re housing for Grant external oil fired boiler. We need to replace the housing as it has rusted. Grant tell me they no longer make the housing for our boiler and the only option is to buy a new one, which seems ridiculous as our oil fired service engineers...
I am trying to self assess the new Condensor Boiler sizing for a 18 yrs old built. It's oil fired Firebird Reillo has packed in. It was a 19- 35KW rated non condensing boilerhouse unit.
This is a large 3000sqft property with ground and first floor.
Considering the first floor with 5 beds 3 loos...
