frost

Frost is a thin layer of ice on a solid surface, which forms from water vapor in an above-freezing atmosphere coming in contact with a solid surface whose temperature is below freezing, and resulting in a phase change from water vapor (a gas) to ice (a solid) as the water vapor reaches the freezing point. In temperate climates, it most commonly appears on surfaces near the ground as fragile white crystals; in cold climates, it occurs in a greater variety of forms. The propagation of crystal formation occurs by the process of nucleation.
The ice crystals of frost form as the result of fractal process development. The depth of frost crystals varies depending on the amount of time they have been accumulating, and the concentration of the water vapor (humidity). Frost crystals may be invisible (black), clear (translucent), or white; if a mass of frost crystals scatters light in all directions, the coating of frost appears white.
Types of frost include crystalline frost (hoar frost or radiation frost) from deposition of water vapor from air of low humidity, white frost in humid conditions, window frost on glass surfaces, advection frost from cold wind over cold surfaces, black frost without visible ice at low temperatures and very low humidity, and rime under supercooled wet conditions.Plants that have evolved in warmer climates suffer damage when the temperature falls low enough to freeze the water in the cells that make up the plant tissue. The tissue damage resulting from this process is known as "frost damage". Farmers in those regions where frost damage is known to affect their crops often invest in substantial means to protect their crops from such damage.

Frost protection valve, detect air or water temp?

Hi, Short version: Do frost protection valves trigger when the water in the pipe gets to threshold, or when the air temp drops? Long version: I'd rather use frost protection + anti-freeze cycle on my mitsubishi ecodan heat pump. The warranty is apparently fine with that combination, and it...

    combi boiler frost protection

Hi I am somewhat confused. My daughter has a combi boiler bought 2-3 years ago and has it timed to come on in morning for an hour and at night for a few hours using "auto"? mode I had been brought up to leave boilers on manual and set the thermostat low at night to prevent pipes from...

Boiler frost protection in the loft

I would like some guidance regarding the Worcester CDi 29 Classic boiler. According to the manual it has a holiday mode and frost protection mode for when away for a period of time such as a holiday, both of which disables the central heating system and both require it to be set manually. I have...

    Frost Protection and low pressure

If my boiler is set to frost protection but the boiler is low on pressure would the pump still kick in at low temp? I only ask this because it is in my caravan. I've drained it down and don't really want to power it back up just to fill the water pressure to then drain it back down again.

    Disconnect external frost protection?

Hi all, My boiler was kind of new & installed last year July, I know there's build-in frost protection. Also, there's an old external frost protection (attached photo) that the engineer did not disconnect it when installed the new boiler. I wonder if I need to disconnect/get rid of the old...

Wire up frost star to Ideal combo 30

I have an ideal combi 30 boiler and I want to install a frost stat Drayton. I am confused by the wiring because I believe the boiler has no voltage contacts yet all frost stats have 230v. The boiler has two contacts yet the stat has only one switch wire. So confused how to wire up and concerned...

    Frost Stat replacement?

My boiler suddenly seems to come on at random times for a few minutes throughout the day and night. It is a Potterton Suprima in garage. I suspect the Honeywell Frost Stat has become faulty, it doesn't currently seem cold enough for the frost stat to kick in. I'm guessing the pipe stat is...

    Boiler Frost Protection in operation?

Hi all, Our heating set time is 7:30am off. This morning at around 8:35am the pump started to run, water motorised valve opened, and boiler started to operate! This operation ran till 12:15pm (pump stopped, valve closed and boiler stopped), totally around 3hour and 40mins! ====I assume this...

Boiler frost protection built-in CONFlICT with separate one?

frost stat - how long should it run for?

Just checking my understanding of frost stats.. My customer has a boiler in a garage (12year old Vaillant/British Gas boiler on an unvented system), with an external frost stat wired in (not a pipe stat, but a 'room stat' from 0 to 10c). If the ambient temperature drops below the set point...

    Boiler frost protection

Hi, I have an oil fired boiler situated in the garage which is uninsulated. It has a Honeywell frost stat set to 4deg and pipe stat set to 20deg. In the cold weather we’re having it’s coming on for about 1 minute every so often as expected to do what it’s supposed to. There’s something I just...

    Stop frost stat kicking in?

We have a 15 year old boiler situated in a poorly insulated garage (fixed to the same wall as our bedroom). When it’s 5c outside (16c in house) it’s about the same in the garage and the frost stat kicks in. Twice a night we get the woken by the boiler coming on, the pump working and the pipes...

    Frost thermostat problems

Sorry, this is a slightly unconventional question... I have two wall-mounted Calorex dehumidifiers in my garage/workshop. These have fan heaters (2kw, I believe) built-in to them. The idea is to stop the dehumidifiers from freezing up. They were supplied with very cheap 2-wire thermostats...
