loft
A loft is a building's upper storey or elevated area in a room directly under the roof (American usage), or just an attic: a storage space under the roof usually accessed by a ladder (primarily British usage). A loft apartment refers to large adaptable open space, often converted for residential use (a converted loft) from some other use, often light industrial. Adding to the confusion, some converted lofts include upper open loft areas.
Hello, and thanks for taking the time to read.
I'm trying to work out if the idea I have is practical?
The water pressure in my newly renovated house (4 bathrooms is tragic).
Current set up is:
A hot/cold mixer in the main ensuite which is ok as long as you don't run anything else.
One electric...
Hi
I recently did some pipe insulating in my loft.
The only two I didn't do were the vent pipes. Not sure if that is the right term for them? They are the pipes that feed water back into the top of the tanks when there is excess, presumably from steam, expansion, etc. The one going to the cold...
We've just bought this house, and looking around the loft there is a large water container (clean) and a much smaller container next to it filled with mouldy looking gunk and a ball valve (?). This doesn't look good. But I have no idea whether it's in use or redundant and why it's gunked up like...
I have a viessman vitodens 222F combi storage boiler on the ground floor. It has 100l capacity inbuilt cylinder which is delivered on mains pressure.
I bought it hoping I could have two showers across floors running with hot water even if it’s a short while, while avoiding an unvented...
I would like some guidance regarding the Worcester CDi 29 Classic boiler. According to the manual it has a holiday mode and frost protection mode for when away for a period of time such as a holiday, both of which disables the central heating system and both require it to be set manually.
I have...
So after having engineer drawings back I'm limited to around 90cm of loft height.
I was thinking of a preplumbed horizontal cylinder. But now wondering if a pump and zone valves on the landing in a separate cupboard with just the cylinder flow return going to the loft.
Is this an ok idea of...
I'd like to install an unvented cylinder in the loft. With limited headroom it would have to be horizontal.
I want to keep my existing valiant condensing boiler.
I currently have a vented set up.
A couple of plumbers said this could work.
Will the feed and expansion tank for the central...
Hi. I’m having a loft conversion done in the Uk. My builder has made the connection for the hot water to the loft but since he has done this my hot water in the rest of the house is not getting hot. I have a combination boiler and the water gets to say 37 degrees ish but not hot hot for washing...
Hi there
I have an existing soil stack on the side of my house. I have extended the house by building a loft.
The loft company ran the waste from the loft over the roof straight into (i.e. closing off) what was the soil pipe - and added an AAV at loft level.
However now I am reroofing and...
Hello. In this recent cold snap my loft has been getting condensation droplets form on the bitumen membrane. I had previously installed lap vents and minimised storage to improve air flow.
The loft is well insulated apart form an area under the cold water tank. However my cold water tank is...

We're having the loft converted at the front of our house, and the plumber has routed the new water and central heating pipes via the rafters in the back loft (which isn't being converted). He's wrapped some insulation (looks like TopSleeve) round them and assures me it'll be fine. I'm worried...
Hi All
Newbie so please bear with. We are selling our old house - built 1880. The purchaser has shared their survey report which states that the pipe work in the loft is of DIY standard. This was done before we bought house 10 years ago, and everything works fine but obviously I have to try and...
The copper gas pipe to my boiler in the loft runs between joists and sits on the plasterboard. I understand that it should not be covered by insulation. Why? Is it satisfactory to create a dome over the pipe with upside down guttering and then put fibreglass insulation over the top please?
Current setup:
Cold water tank, and header tank in loft.
Hot water tank in airing cupboard at top of stairs.
Power shower (mira event xs) in main bathroom, and same in en-suite.
20 year old Baxi boiler, still going strong.
Background:
Need to free up as much space in loft for conversion. Enough...
I need to run new flow and returns in loft and soldering is out of the question,I will use copper as worried about plastic pipe but which is the best fitting compression, shark bite tectie classic or sprint or hep , not worried about cost !
Cheers
Jason
I have three cold water tanks (2*cw + ch header) on a platform roughly 1M above the loft floor, I have not encountered this arrangement before and wondering how best to insulate it.
Normally in previous houses with the tank direct on the ceiling joists I have left the ceiling un-insulated under...
Hi all, diy homeowner here, we have a loft conversion (installed pre our occupation) there is an ensuite toilet and sink, the sink however seems to let through sewer gases and in not a small amount either! The soil stack vent terminates at the original roof height of the house so quite some...
Hi all,
I really hope someone can help me because it is causing so much worry!
I bought my house 3 years ago and didn’t know at the time that the boiler was venting out against regs into our neighbours driveway. Our house has a garage conversion so is right up to the boundary line, and the...
