soldering
Soldering (US: ; UK: ) is a process in which two or more items are joined together by melting and putting a filler metal (solder) into the joint, the filler metal having a lower melting point than the adjoining metal. Unlike welding, soldering does not involve melting the work pieces. In brazing, the work piece metal also does not melt, but the filler metal is one that melts at a higher temperature than in soldering. In the past, nearly all solders contained lead, but environmental and health concerns have increasingly dictated use of lead-free alloys for electronics and plumbing purposes.
I'm putting a new yorkshire fitting on the end of a pipe from which an old fitting has been removed. Do I need to remove all traces of old solder from the pipe end before applying the new fitting, or is it sufficient just to clean up the old solder coating in the same way as I would a 'bare'...
I'm a complete notice and I working on my heatings motorised valves on my S plan system. I was modifying the system to add an arrester. Long story short, I made a bodge of the soldering due to persistent tiny water dribbling in the pipe being soldered which I overlooked despite the system being...
Two pictures from a gas boiler install - is this dangerous, or just embarrassingly poor workmanship. What are the medium term implications of the joins like this?
Do I need to get another plumber in to review and fix this? It is just shoddy but acceptable?

Hi,
Short version: I have about 4" of pipe sticking out of a concrete floor in a cupboard. It makes a 45-degree bend as it exists (bent, not with elbows), the last cm before the open end is pretty much straight, but as a result of the bend it is not perfectly round. I mean it is pretty much...
Hi all, keen DIYer here. Installing an outside tap and have tried soldering the joints leading from the 15mm copper pipe to the mains pipe. My question is a bit random but as I was soldering, the copper pipe going through the wall obviously got very hot, and got me thinking, could the heat...
I need to run new flow and returns in loft and soldering is out of the question,I will use copper as worried about plastic pipe but which is the best fitting compression, shark bite tectie classic or sprint or hep , not worried about cost !
Cheers
Jason
I want to solder a 15mm end-feed elbow onto a straight run of pipe to join it up to a radiator. I've cut the existing pipe run just a fraction too short to come straight up to hit the radiator valve, but I'm hoping it could still work...
How important is it that the copper pipe is pushed all...
Howdy I need to install a new rough in valve in my shower-bath. I bought a Delta 10000 UNBX and using the existing 1/2" copper piping was able to fit up the 2 inlets and pipe to the shower head and another to the tub, all 1/2 copper. The bathroom is on the ground level. In the basement right...
A few weeks ago I found a flux with an engineer. It's not a typicall flux you can buy like powerflux for example. What is interesting, after soldering ,the joint looks very shiny. Also ,if your skin is sensitive doesn't irritates, moreover pipes and even hands are clean(not making green )
Any clues...
I would like to simply cut the flex copper pipe off just past the cut-off valve and attach a Shartbite male fitting or a compression fitting on the remaining copper stub which would be 7/8 inch in length after the cut. Would that meet code? Live in North Texas.
Thanks,
Don
Is there a modern alternative to the old bread trick for soldering where you can’t get pipework completely dry?
I’ve made a DIY version of a jet swet but it obviously only works on straight pipe sections.
Hi,
Im trying unsuccessfully to solder a 22mm to 3/4 yorkshire straight adapter. Ive done a fair bit of soldering before without issues but its all been on 15mm pipe.
With Yorkshire fittings im used to seeing a ring of older appear after about 15 seconds and then stop. However with this...

Just curious to know how many of you guys are happy to solder whilst a fibre washer is in place? Or do you remove the washer first? Obviously I’m on about soldering quite closely to the fitting with fibre washer not like 4 metres away.
Decided to push the boat out and buy a new soldering mat. Prices vary wildly from around£5 which is like my current one which has lasted me 10 yrs plus, only DIY use, up to one at nearly £30 made by Rothenberger is this price justified?
Hi all,
Are there any good matts or other alternatives to standard "monument" stuff?
On my third matt while they do last about a year the biggest issue is they produce more smoke than the pipe being soldered! The smell is quite nasty too.
Can anyone tell me what the name is for the process of soldering fittings to the wall of a pipe is like in the pic below? I remember seeing a video of someone making the holes for the fitting but can’t find it anymore and need to make a fitting like in the picture.
Many thanks
