terminal
A computer terminal is an electronic or electromechanical hardware device that can be used for entering data into, and transcribing data from, a computer or a computing system. The teletype was an example of an early day hardcopy terminal, and predated the use of a computer screen by decades.
Early terminals were inexpensive devices but very slow compared to punched cards or paper tape for input, but as the technology improved and video displays were introduced, terminals pushed these older forms of interaction from the industry. A related development was timesharing systems, which evolved in parallel and made up for any inefficiencies of the user's typing ability with the ability to support multiple users on the same machine, each at their own terminal/terminals.
The function of a terminal is typically confined to transcription and input of data; a device with significant local programmable data processing capability may be called a "smart terminal" or fat client. A terminal that depends on the host computer for its processing power is called a "Dumb terminal" or a thin client. A personal computer can run terminal emulator software that replicates functions of a real-world terminal, sometimes allowing concurrent use of local programs and access to a distant terminal host system, either over a direct serial connection or over a network using, e.g, SSH.
Hi,
This morning, I found that my immersion heater had stopped working. The short wire that runs from the thermostat to the live terminal of the heater had fried (or at least its insulation did) and disconnected from the terminal pin.
Although I've scavenged a replacement wire from an old...
I am a gsr and just wanted clarification as to why its not recommended to just use a 5 core cable connecting live, neutral, com and nc from combi boiler terminal box rather then feeding another cable from spur socket just for live and neutral for reciver box. Any advise
some advice needed, I could do with some input on a fanned flue outlet being 200 mm away from a cooker hood vent, the vent has flaps which close when not under positive pressure from hood. would this be classed as safe due to the flaps closing when cooker hood not in operation. I respect the...
bit of guidance needed. I have a flue which is round about 200 mm away from a cooker hood vent, the vent terminal from the cooker hood has got flaps which are closed when the cooker hood is not in use, so effectively only open when under positive pressure from hood, just a bit unsure as to what...
Just been to look at an old Vaillant combi for an elderly couple.
It's under a Vaillant contract and they have AR'd it because the bird guard fins of the inner flue terminal have gone brittle and fallen off.
Can I just fit a stainless flue guard to get over this?
Originally, I though this was going to be a straight forward question and then just now I checked something.
To cut a lengthy explaination short...a friend has what we thought was a living flame fire, which sits within a brick chimney breast. Work is being done on the chimney on the roof and it...
Any one come across it were a builder has built a house and were the position they want the boiler the flue points out to a boundary. No surface there. But less than 600mm away from the boundary line between 2 properties. I am correct in saying this is not acceptable? Its mainly for nuisance...
Hi, take a look at the following and let me know what you think.
A customer wants an unobtrusive flue terminal (new installation) in the front of a listed building. The preferred site is in the center of an alcove, approx 600mm from the floor with more than 300mm clearance to all siting...
hi guys,
got a flavel firenza fire in a brick chimney with no flue liner failing on spillage and I've noticed that the terminal is the type you would use with a liner should this not be a pot?
thanks nick
Got a customer with two of these. They are 3 years old and the terminals were white. He had them sprayed black to match the down pipes, but after a year or so, it's coming off.
can you just get the black terminal, like the Vaillant ones. Or will it mean getting two complete black flue kits...
So I ''at risked'' a boiler last week because the flue terminal is not sealed with cement externally, it is sealed badly internally with silicone.
Land lord is questioning warning notice.. 'can't it just be sealed internally with cement?'
I said no as flue gases could potentially enter the...
Is it usually considered acceptable for an open-vented gas fire (by which I mean one which vents its exhaust gases up a chimney by natural draught) to have a terminal that will allow a bird into the chimney?
Got a phone call from my mother yesterday. She's not going to be able to meet me...
Yesterday I fitted a new Worcester Grecnstar Danesmoor Kitchen system boiler (Oil, flue, and hydraulics so far) but the customer had specified, and purchased, the fascia mounted Worcester programmer and I can't work out how to connect everything up so I'm wondering if any of you bright sparks :)...
Hi Guys,
I've been asked to replace a damaged horizontal flue terminal (80/125mm Flue) It's the older all white terminal, so just replacing the terminal spigot isn't an option.
The boiler's on the 1st floor of the house. Horizontal run in the loft with three 1 metre extensions.
The boiler was...
Hello
I'm looking for a new external terminal flue guard as our existing one has a hole burned through it and needs replacing. However it has 4 holes for screws instead of 3. Does anyone know where I can find one with 4 screw holes? It would save us drilling new ones. We need one asap to get...
I need to fit a boiler in a pitched roof house extension which I have not done before. As it is pitched I might need an extra length of pipe. Is it the same extension piece for ordinary flue as a roof terminal? And as the joint might be in the void from ceiling to tiles, I guess I need to cut in...
Sorry can't edit the title, it should read changing to a digital programmable thermostat.
Hi. We currently have a Potterton PRT 100 'dial' room stat in our property. The heating system is fairly standard with a Potterton Boiler, albeit we also have a Gledhills Thermal Store that only allows a...
Hi there!
I'm studying on my gas engineer course at the moment and I'm immersing myself into the world of Flues. Looking at the distance tables I can't see anything about how far away a flue terminal has to be from a chimney that's connected to an open fire. Is the chimney just generally...
