I'm guessing not. Looked like someone had put a compression coupler on it (it was already fine, terminating inside f+e) and stuck another bit of pipe almost reaching bottom of tank. What am I missing? Removed it.

The f&e should terminate above the water level by a couple of inches.
It was probably submerged because it was pumping over.
Better to address the cause than bodge it up like that.

Just worth mentioning, f + e tanks should only be one third full , loads overfill them.

This is something I notice has been done for decades, even by so called heating engineers.
The 10 gallon expansion tanks are called 10/4 tanks - meaning 10 gallon full, but 4 gallon actual. They only should be filled just above the top of feed outlet (approx 100mm depth of water). As I say to customers, the expansion tanks are intended for top up and expansion only, - not for water storage.

I always empty them back down to a third full after changing fault ball valves. Usually by syphoning into a bucket using a bit of hose and getting a mouthful of s**t 1 out of every 10 attempts.

Was piped up so it nearly reach bottom of f+e tank. Wasn't submerged due to increased water level.

Why would piping it up to the bottom allieviate the symptoms of pumping over? Less noise of filling? Why would anyone notice given CWSC constantly filling/emptying? Still confused.

But a wet vac man! Best thing I've ever done, no more gagging from sludges up water!

It wouldn't stop pumping over if anything I would of thought it would of made it worse but it will stop the noise so the customer would of thought it was ok.

Even I have bought a wet vac lol , beats using the bottom of the tank as mouthwash

I have a wet vac. Lugging it up into a loft seems like more hassle than risking having to spit out some gunk now and then.

Yeah, my thoughts exactly. So if no other suggestions, I'm guessing good call on removing it.

Plus also, had someone not checked the f+e and seen the vent was submerged, couldn't draining down cause some sort of destructive vacuum effect?
