Our worcester greenstar he boiler sounds like a world war 2 lancaster bomber trying to take off !

This happens when it first switches on in the morning - whenever the hot tap
is turned on - or it pumps water when the thermostat clicks it on.
An engineer has suggested we should add an extra "tank" of some sort of repair

Can anyone tell me what this is - is it a manufacturers recommended "fix" or what? Is it safe and is it normal to do this?

also does anyone know where I can download a manual for this - I cant find one on the worcester site ... have I just missed it?

The boiler is 14 years old.

When was it last serviced ?

Agreed I’ve just had the same issue with a different model has engineer in fact just picked up on wear and tear issues and is repairing it accordingly before noise is addressed

it was serviced 10-07-17 and every year previously.

Does the suggested repair sound correct to you?

PS - I've found a manual now.

NO sounds like he's suggesting adding another expansion vessel

TBH I would get a second opinion from a gas safe engy

hi shaun
thanks for the quick response.

That sounds very definite.
Can you say why so I can tell him why I don't want it done that way?

Do you have to keep topping the pressure in the system up ?

it doesn't need topping up that more than about every 3-4 months or so I think. the other issues it has are randomly switching off and not heating radiators regardless of thermostat (I power off and on and it runs ok again) This does cause serious problems but not technical ones. That is worse in cold weather presumably because its on longer.
And the water out of the hot tap is very white and milky (it hasn't done that like that since it was new)

I would say you have other issues that an expansion vessel won't solve

Yes I think you're right.

Can you explain why adding another expansion vessel is not a good idea though?

Time to start thinking about a replacement boiler ! at this age just be careful what you spend on it,

It's not a bad idea just wasting money unless you've got a really big system then again you wouldn't have a combi boiler

just for info for everyone....
It seems some sort of rubber diaphram had split in half and got
sucked into a fan. The final repair took about ten minutes.

Thanks for all the suggestions though.
