i think a renewables section on this forum would be good, not sure if it has ever been suggested?

100 percent. more plumbers and heating engineers are making the cross over, so would be able to sort each others growing pains out.

I would say that, I'm technical for a heat pump company. I get to play with the latest kit!

I may be of some help in this new section as this is my specialist area (so to speak) heat pumps i.e. ground source, air source, air to air, solar and heat recovery its all very interesting :)

shall forward the views for renewable section.

can somebody explain to me why i should install in MY house an air source heat pump boiler as opposed to the solar instalation i have planned ??

Depends on your current fuel, and what you're trying to achieve.

reducing carbon footprint. go go heat pump.
reducing bills, depends on your existing fuel and boiler.
suitability of house, not so much of an issue for high temp heat pumps

solar is ace. a no brainer. Just dont bother working out the payback if you dont use much hot water.

Family of 4 with teenage kids, fit solar.

Smaller property wanting to reduce bills and do the green bit, go heat pump.

hi migo personally i wouldnt have solar on my house if it was given to me, works great in the height of summer but in winter its a waste of time. and when you consider the cost of it there is no pay back despite what any sales man will tell you. thats my experiance of solar,
I have also metioned in the past that we should have a renewables section on here. I have now been installing heatpumps for over a year and I find it amazing how far in the dark ages we are in this country with them.
regards
Mike

What forum would you like the re-newables sub forum adding too...

plumbing ???

i think it needs its own forum IMHO

I would fit solar if you can do it for cheap enough, but it wont be much of an investment at all. And its fair to say its usless in winter.

I agree needs its own section. Would go a long way to de bunking some of the nonsense myths, usually rattled out by blokes who have never seen a heat pump.

And yes, I know I am head of technical for a heat pump firm, but you know what, I didnt get here by sticking with combi bashing. You will notice in all of my posts I have never promoted our heat pumps or solar, and the majority of my replies are on heating questions.

If you want a sponsor, let me know. There just may be money in the pot the rate we are selling pumps.

To the previous, solar is spectacular in winter. Today has been sunny, cloudless and our solar has taken our 220 litre cylinder up to 61.7 degrees, after the morning showers and washing machine. It's as good as the kit and the spec of the install.

61.7 degrees Celsius??? wow ..mine made 47 at collector today at peak [viesmann system. 60 vac tubes] don t have a temp gauge on dhw though..it was sunny here today !!! what panels do u have

Hi,

I also agree renewables need its own section, I do solar, wood pellet, wood gasifiers and looking at air to water heat pumps at the moment.

I import, supply, service and install, the only reason I install is the amount of problems we had from installers not reading the manuals made it necessary to go back on the tools.

Business is in Ireland not the UK so no hidden agenda.

30 x 58mm evacuated tubes. just generic chinese tubes.

I used to be a viessmann key installer for renewables. Those thermomax (rebranded by viessmann) tubes are not great. They were developed because the government bunged a load of money in to save the firm. It worked for a short while. Kingspan own them now.

The DF tubes are damn unreliable too. the heat pipe ones are better.

And it helps that we've had a beautiful clear day!
