I have lived in the same house for 22 years from new, I have had a few TRV's fail in the last few years and there are a few acting up now so I think I need to replace the lot.
I have a Honeywell Smartfit in S Plan configuration which I believe is no longer made and difficult to get spares for. It uses low voltage 2-port valves and cylinder thermostat although I have mains cabling running to them all.

I'm thinking the time maybe right to 'upgrade' to a new control system like a NEST or HIVE or something similar.

Just wanting some advice on this. I'm not an expert by any means but I see there is a thing called an industry standard backplate, is it a good idea to transition to that so that any future control system will be an easy install?
