REDSAW

called at a house today where the hot water has a brown tinge to it when run, cold is nice and clear.
its an open vent system, plastic h/w header tank, glow worm hideaway floor standing boiler.

my thoughts is the cast in boiler is rusting up and the primary coil in the hw cylinder is pinholed?
if it was the cylinder then with it being copper the tinge would be green/blue!!

any ideas please...

Has someone drained the ranks/ cylinder lately? Could have just disturbed the sediment in the tank and cyl?
maybe tell them to leave it a few days and see if it clears.

if there is only the one tank it will be a primatic cylinder,
the air has been lost, bubble will need to be reestablished.
or its because the is now to many rads on it?

Had this before which transpired to be the Iron content of the water. When initially drawn it was clear, however when the hot was drawn there was a red/brown tinge to the water. After lots of flushing & cleaning I found out that the water sources was a private well going through a filter system that was not doing its job. Specialist intervention and the issue was resolved.
I believe it is when the oxygen content of the well water is low but the iron/manganese bearing water is clear, but after its exposure to the air the Iron/Manganese oxidise and change from colourless dissolved form to a coloured solid form giving a red/brown hue to the water and sometimes sediment forms. This can also colour the washing. The situation can also be made worse with Iron pipework in the property.

Regards

Arthur.
