Boiler is a potterton puma 80.
Hot water is fine.
There is no room thermostat.
Timer is an integral mechanical clock.
Boiler responds to timer : starting its proving process, and sometimes lighting the burners for approx 10 to 20 seconds ( though heating and pipework has been warm on both visits to property). However customer feels it has not ignited when she has requested it to do so.
However, boiler has come on when house has been cold, through the night from approx 2am to 9am. Boiler has integral frost stat that activates at 5 degrees and is supposed to warm by 10 degrees. House however has been fully heated, radiators hot to the touch when on.
Boiler has a permanent pilot which extinguishes if overheat thermostat is triggered. Pilot has not been cut off, suggesting overheat stat is ok.
As the central heating has been on ( just not necessarily when requested) this suggests mechanically boiler is sound: pump, air pressure switch, fan, overheat stat, ch stat, frost stat and diverter).

Instinct and training suggest the modulating board needs replacing, but any other thoughts would be welcomed as it has my colleague and I perplexed.
