Hi Clair and welcome along to the best plumbing place on the web.
Add where you live roughly, and maybe other info like how long you have lived there without the problem and make of the boiler if you know and I`m sure some one will help you.

I have lived here for 17 years, the boiler was put in around that time as no central heating in the house before that.l live in Marlborough in Wiltshire and had this problem for a couple of months now. I don't know what make of boiler it is but it is a back boiler on the fire and has been serviced, and my hot water tank is up in the airing cupboard. Sorry that's about all I know.

My tank is in the airing cupboard upstairs and I have been here 17 years. The boiler has been serviced but that's all, and had this problem for the last couple of months now.

My tank is in the airing cupboard upstairs, and the only work done is an annual service. I have lived here for 17 years and had this problem for about 2 months.

Hi Clair
there are lots of possibilities depending on how the pipework is configured.
do you know if the hot water is heated by gravity circulation?
if it is pumped then zone valve issue is likely
is there a cylinder stat?
to many possibilities, provide more details or get someone to have a look.
