Discuss Drain capping question in the USA area at PlumbersForums.net

Just before Christmas I started noticing a strange sickly smell in our Kitchen.
To cut a very long and stressful story short it ended up being the result of a massive blockage in the neighbours drain (They are end of run, we are mid run).

During our investigations we found that there is a redundant path 60cm from the inspection chamber that we assume used to be the old connection to the toilet (We have been here 2 years, bathroom was moved in 2017).

This redundant path is not capped where it joins the drain and we think it is not capped properly at the other end, hence the smell. The problem is, we have no idea where the end of the pipe runs and the relating room's floor is tiled, making investigating this a headache.

Therefore, Is it possible to cap the pipe in the sewer when it is 60cm from the chamber or do I need to dig out the pipe and get it cut/capped?

Many thanks in advance

If it's definitely redundant just cap at the inspection chamber. đź‘Ť
If unsure get a local drain guy to camera it

Problem is the redundant junction sits 40-60 cm from the inspection chamber, I wasn't sure if there was some clever method of using a camera and some kind of inflatable device to block it remotely. We have no idea where the internal end of the pipe goes and to find it would mean ripping up the tiled floor!

And if there is such a magical method, i'd be getting a professional to do it as clearly i am clueless about all of this!
