Hi everyone, I've had rods break and come apart before and I can't go losing them up a customers drain, so recommendations please......

Which drain rods do you recommend, for a tradesmen, not a DIY set?

And/or how can I tell a good set from bad?

The best, unbreakable (subject to use) are Steelkane, as used by the drain pro's.

I've had a gander, look awesome, for regular drain rodding, any idea what diameter I should get? There's about 3-4 options!

Steelkane are best i worked for dyno rod and they used them the thicker ones ane more solid but the thinner ones go round bends better dont bother with cheap ones as when on dyno rod had to get quiet a few out of drains that owners lost or broke.

I would say for the occasional use a ‘normal plumber’ needs a standard screw together set ( or two) is all that’s required.
If you inspect the ferrule/rod interface as you put them together and ensure you operate them with a twisting action so that they don’t unscrew during use they will serve you well for years.
I have two sets for extra length when needed ( plus borrowing an extra set from a mate as well one occasion).
I have chucked a couple of rods when the rod cracked near the ferrule, but I’ve never lost a rod or had them come undone.
The only thing I might do is get a thin set for extra flexibility when you come across a deep narrow chamber, ie a modern plastic one instead of a good old brick job.
