Hi all. I've signed up to do my basic gas safety course as I work as a plumber and heating engineer. Most of our gas related work is boiler installations. I've got my Viper book to study and my portfolio to complete. Has anyone recently gone down this route and can offer any advice. Is it a waste of time trying to do the ACS assessments if most of our work is installations.

No on an install you can get all of the situations. Camera diary and organisation!

Oh that's ok then. There are some maintenance sheets in the portfolio but I have the option to do them in college. I was told that on one job I would be able to complete 3-4 task sheets at a time. So far I've just took some photos of an installation that has to be adapted for our installation. Things like pipe not being sleeved or sealed and being to close to electrical outlets.

It's perfectly acceptable to complete portfolio on installs only, think of the install as a set of different tasks that can all work towards a portfolio:
Visual inspection and TT
new carcass calculation
New install
Test
Purge
Commission, incl controls and FGA
So it should cover a good few things, however it won't give you much experience of older controls or open flues which is a big part of ACS

I did mention the work we do is mainly new stuff but the course assured me they would teach me certain things. My boss has a wide range of experience so hopefully he cAn also help
