Evening guys,

Hopefully this is the right forum to discuss this if not much apologies.

My work is picking up and want to be competitive but also the business needs to pay its way. I have worked hard to develop a good relationship with the local merchants and my terms I think are fair. I am looking for some advice on customer mark up, I am looking to add 20% which I think is fair but am I selling myself short? Any help appreciated!

These days no your doing well if you can add 20% on to materials

10-15% seems to be the norm

Customers are a lot more savvy nowadays with the ability to look things up making it harder when you quote.

Edit; cross post with jon.

Dead right pal , customer sees , say a shower for sale on the net for ÂŁ200 , that will be cheaper than we can buy it from a merchant, he will actually think we buy it for ÂŁ180 , so you might as well let him buy it , and charge more on your labour .

Exactly but who gets the headache fitting say a flimsy shower tray? At least I can still play the "you buy it and the warranty is between you and where you brought card".

I agree mate. But I clearly state that my work is guaranteed but if any of the parts you supply are damaged or wrong or do not fit. Then that is on their heads and I will still bill you my original labour plus any extra days it takes to fit later on.
