Dear Engineer,

Firstly, I hope you do not mind us contacting you in this manner.

We are a specialist Gas agency based in Aylesbury , UK . We cover nationwide and are currently recruiting in your area for some long term servicing workdue to last until April 2014 with a possibility of extension & would like to know if you would possibly be interested in this work.

I have put a few basic details about the job, if you feel this may be something that interests you we would be happy to discuss in greater detail.

Orion Electrotech are seeking experienced self employed service engineers, to cover an ongoing contract on behalf of a leading supplier for private customers. 8-10 services will be booked in daily with a possibility of requesting more should you find you have the time! There will be an opportunity to take on breakdowns in the peak winter time should this be of interest to you. Rates for breakdowns will be confirmed upon application.

Servicing pay: -

ü £18/boiler
ü £9/fire
ü £6.75 any other appliance
ü +Monthly Bonuses

This is an exciting opportunity that can not only offer you longevity of work, but also consistency.

Some do but usually not for long which is why they struggle to get guys to work for them. You can imagine the quality of the trainers needed to run around the houses.

I have literally just received the same email and thought exactly the same, infact I didn't even bother working out what you could potentially earn in a day.....

Probably not as much as you think. They will have priced it low to win the work. Probably HA stuff.

saw a work note from dyno rod today, they had turned out to look at a dripping tap, not an emergency leak as not leaking :) to replace unrepairable taps! £90 plus vat plus parts, note to self, review pricing structure asap :)

Good god I could barely buy a packet of smokes for the service price on the gas fire. Guessing this is one of those ''dont call me because i wont call you either ones''

Email them back tell em your interested let them line up a load of work then on the morning your due to start tell you've had a better job offer selling the big issue
I like having fun with these people ppi companies and no win no fee crooks are the best.
I usually ad-lib a ludicrous story then tell them to talk to my PA on 07767 113738 which is another ppi company.
Unfortunately they've stopped calling me :-(

Loads of engineers work for that around my way but thats what happens when every other person is gsr ,unfortunately its the rates where i live

Went to see a firm about some contracting work for the green deal government scheme £120 quid for combi combi swaps they are paying.

you could never remove and re fit and test a fire for that price

Anyone who is doing work for this price is off their heads. They must be cutting corners to do them and are also taking all the responsibility. Should anything happen it is their name on the paperwork and the main contractor will wash their hands of it.

I think these ones you just supply labour they sort materials, access etc

Other firms are paying 275-325 per boiler but you need to organise access, supply and pay materials up front they just supply boiler and flue.

£9 for a fire lol..

I hate doing dfe fires. They can pass every test but i still have a niggle in the back of my head. Always try to persuade cust to get CO detector in room.

Do they listen???

One of my mates does sub-contracting to npower and he gets £16 a job whether it's boiler service or breakdown. He doesn't do fires and other appliances. But he's got it pretty easy, usually all the jobs are in the same street and the vast majority of them are brand new ecotec pros so don't take long to service.

But when he does on call, he could be travelling miles and miles between each job as there's only one engineer coving the whole of s.wales!

I do a whole house be that just a combi boiler, or a bbu, fire front, cooker and dfe in the same house for £20, you win some you lose some type affair for a HA. I get allocated 10 a day, normally in the same area and get access to six or seven normally. Its not great money but its regular and I can usually fit in some private work somewhere to top up the money. Im not experienced enough or rich enough lol to turn down regular work, but I dont think id bother for £16

£75 boiler service, £65 llc for a boiler other appliances extra! why dont people see their worth and charge sensible rates. could you get your car serviced of £20??? its time people saw sense

thats more like what i charge a private customer, when a HA are giving you 60 jobs a week they get to set the price.

That is so wrong, the company knows its not feesable. So to my mind are guilty in some way for the results.

if everyone refused to work for stupid money for ha groups then they would also have to pay the going rate the private person does but with a reasonable discount. 60 at stupid money means you work like a bluued assed fly for a grand or so that you can earn for 10 private jobs and saving on fuel and damage to the van and still have time for a profitable boiler change or three. one day the lights will come on. why do people pay to learn a trade and pay to carry on being able to do their chosen trade and accept poor returns for doing their chosen role.

I agree with what you are saying lame plumber, the trouble is I dont think id get 10 private jobs a week without resorting to rated people or such like, and I really cant be doing with that. Im not keen on being a busy fool, but tbh Im on pretty reasonable money for HA ive heard of blokes doing them for as little as £12!!!

£12 aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaagh is it any wonder the housing associations take the mick. if you start to look at what it costs you to set up and run your business surely you cant cover your fixed costs for what your bringing back in and having something to feed the kids. I think Mrs TP said all earlier or in another post of this ilk. Why does every one even consider rated people or the like, just find some local parish mags and advertising monthlies and rely on them for new work, build a customer base and bin the vultures until they see sense. deep breathe and rant over :) just remember your worth so much more than 18 notes a service

if you work cheap you wont work long. Funnily enough if too many dont charge decent rates it affects the whole industry in the end and thats not funny

Ideally we'd all stick together and charge decent rates. But in reality there are guys who need to feed family's and there always will be.

I have seen the same complany offering 120 lol they will even want us to supply the combi lol

If some guys dont have enough work to support the family, then something is wrong, you should start to build up a customer base before going self employed imho, if you dont, you are going to be working for scraps, the grass on the other side only looks greener, when you get your ticket, stay with the guy who helped you get it to build up experience and build up some custom in spare time, if you have to work for peanuts and then work longer hours/more days because of it, you are actually doing more harm to your family, because you dont have sufficient time with them and are likely regularly stressed out and they will feel the impact of that, sorry if that sounds a bit harsh to some, but if more took notice of this kind of advice there would be far less going out of business or going bankrupt, I have lost count of the amount of 'ex' traders in my area.
