Is it just me or do others agree that these valves are pretty useless, when needed, ie taking washing machine out, never seem to close fully with resulting drips.

Morning. It is because people fit them and never ever move the lever until they need to isolate the machine. It is like a stop tap that hasn’t been moved for 10 years. Move it every once in a while and it will be fine.

Agree there but one can only point out so many times, specifically to my daughters, to run the stopcock a couple of times a year.

If you want a decent one that will work

Lever valve and a 3/4 male iron :D
