Its also worth buying up domain names - at .com and .co.uk at the very least. Think about obvious alternative spellings as well.

if you expect to be ltd at some point then you need to do the companies house thing. if not then it don't really matter too much. there are three others that i know of with my name. ones in scotland and his customers ring me on the odd rare occaision ....but other than that no issues
