does anyone know if you can run the dhw from a softened supply on a vailant from what i can find you can on a worcester but not on an ideal

Yes you can Steve. I checked with them. You can't fill the system with softened but DHW circuit is OK.
 
I don't see why not, as Mas said the heating side is a completely different kettle.
 
If its a combi then the dhw would benefit from softened supply... I would still fill the rads with hard tho
