Discuss What is acetone sealant? in the UK Plumbing Forum | Plumbing Advice area at PlumbersForums.net

I have a waste pipe to install and it's giving this warning "Acetoxy sealants must not be used, as they may be detrimental to the plastic used in the manufacture of this gully."

What exactly are the acetoxy sealants to be avoided?

Be really grateful for any advice

Thank you

Your looking for solvent free silicone

Ah Right thank you.
So either those that say "100% silicone" or "solvent free"?

Is that right?
I find not many actually stipulate this so guess most are not suitable

Thanks very much again

Yes correct

Most are ‘acetoxy’ and that gives the distinctive vinegary smell, as acetic acid is given off as it cures. This acid is what the manufacturer of you waste if wary of.

What you require is a “neutral cure” silicone sealant, this is non-acidic.

These are often called “solvent free” or have an N suffix to their name.

Ok thanks very much for info.
So far I'm only finding MAPEI MAPESIL AC that's claiming to be solvent free. About £9-11 per tube. That's no cheap stuff is it.

Are there any other brands others recommend?

Thank you
