My bath/bathroom sink drain pipes empty through an asbestos hopper/downpipe into a gully drain.

I want to remove the hopper/downpipe as the paint is peeling and I don't want to sand it.

I have had a few quotes to remove it - the hopper just sits on top of the downipe with no screws - the downpipe is held in place with two metal brackets

I was thinking about removing this myself - I was gonna paint it in pva first to "seal" it and even wrap it a few times with cling film to be doubley sure - what do people think - would they remove it or leave it to the pro removers ?

Also, does the hopper/downpipe have to be replaced with a hopper and downpipe or would it be acceptable to combine the sink waste with the bath and maybe run 40/50mm pipe direct to the gully drain ?

thanks

I know what I'd do (ie in your situation if it was my house) but it's probably illegal.

Proper way is to pay through the nose to have someone in to do the job properly.

Personally I'd do it myself provided I can be sure to remove it in one piece without making dust. What you do is up to you and its qutie legal provided you don't cause any contamination. Needs to be double bagged. Some local authorities will collect for you, others will have set places you can take to.

Removing asbestos when working for a company is a completely different matter.

You need to think of the environment before you think of your pocket. Health and Safety law is there to protect people. Do not touch it, there is no known cure for asbestosis and if you dump it, no matter how well you think you've wrapped it, someone else may get exposed to it. Albeit the asbestos companies charge a fortune, but they're taking all the risk and paying for it to be disposed of safely afterwards.

I'm with Whpes, local councils provide somewhere to dispose of domestic asbestos waste usually at the recycling centre.

Thanks - our local council have an asbestos disposal facility.

What about replacing the hopper with just a pipe down to the gully drain ? what benefit does the hopper provide ?

if you link them into 50mm pipe youll have to go up to above gutter line with the pipe as a vent

thanks for all the replies. A licensed asbestos remover is coming tomorrow to take it away.

Does the gully drain not also provide an air break (the down pipe will stop short of the water level just below the grid)

the air break/vent will help to stop your water seals being pulled away causing smells. You could use traps with anti vac devices.

Hi, basic question, any insight much appreciated. Looking to have an outdoor tap in my front porch fed from 15mm pex coming up from suspended floor. Pic 1 is inside porch, pex temporarily clipped to give an idea of pipe placement (ignore shoddy blockwork of booted cowboy builder!), Pic 2 is...
