I have had my mains water pipe burst in my garage, it runs up through the garage roof and runs right next to the gas pipe i obviously need to cut out the damaged pipe and replace. Is it possible to solder next to gas pipes or will i have to use comp joints.

You should be fine. As long as the pipes aren't touching (!) and your soldering is reasonable, you will be able to heat the water pipe without affecting the gas pipe at all. Make sure the water pips is fully drained, point the torch away from the gas pipe, and make the new joins away from any solder joints on the gas pipe if you're really paranoid :)

If it's that close you can probably wedge your heat mat between the two pipes.

Basically, you're only going to have a problem if you manage to melt the solder on a joint. Otherwise you're just warming the gas which won't be a problem as there's no oxygen in the pipe! Be careful and you'll be fine.

Thanks all, i will let you know how i get on if you dont hear off me you know whats happened lol, Thanks again
