I saw a post in Hall of Shame thread where a Warix flange was used. Never heard of that one before - what is it used for? Is it just that it is larger and therefore better for high flow rate, such as a pumped shower?

The warix/surrey/essex flanges/fittings are to be used with a pumped shower/outlet using a dip pipe to take the water from lower down the cylinder to prevent air from being sucked into the pump

I'm sure someone else will be along shortly to expand on my simple explanation or correct me if im wrong

that's about it. the warix has shower takeoff on the top with hot water off the side, surrey is opposite way round and the Essex is fitted into the side of the cylinder and very much squeaky bum while doing it lol

essex flange drilled and put in side of cyl, with all the fun that entails. but rubber seals rot however never draws air
warix.york.surry, warick all in top through threaded hole, simpler. can still draw air if too much water pulled off

You use the Warix instead of the Surrey if the cylinder has a horizontal hot tee off and a vertical vent. That means it is just a straight swap.
If you tried the to use a Surrey that would mean the horizontal original hot draw off was too low.

On the subject off the Essex flanges, - they can't take heat at the washers which perish, as Lame said.
You could instead just use an ordinary brass tank fitting if you have a 2 1/4" boss on cylinder to enable you to feed it in to position by threading it on a piece of wire. Just need some sort of means to seal it, - fibre washers or just plenty of ptfe tape can do as a washer.

Also worth noting, if its a old cylinder with a 3/4 tapping, you can't buy warix in this size, they only come 1 inch bsp AFAIK
