Our house was built in 1898 and originally had a detached outhouse with thunderbox. The kitchen sink drained through the exterior wall and into a trapped gulley against the outside wall.
Sometime in the 1960s, the space between the kitchen wall and the outhouse was roofed over, a concrete floor was laid, and a new back door fitted to make a sort of utility room. Nothing was done with the trapped gulley.
When we bought the place, a washing machine was plumbed in in this "utility room", and it drained into a washing machine standpipe/trap thingy which is teed into the sink waste just above the gulley, which was covered over with a vinyl floor tile and gaffer tape
We've just had to have this "utility room" floor relaid, and for reasons of cost we had to leave the gulley, which I now want to seal in order to keep out the pong. I'm OK making an airtight cover for the gully opening and sealing that to the waste pipe going though it, but what to do about air flow into the drain?
I need to end up with one 1.5"/40mm waste pipe going through the plate into the gully, from which I can tee off the washing machine trap and standpipe, but won't I need the equivalent of an air admittance valve to avoid the water in the washing machine trap being sucked out when the kitchen sink discharges to the drain?
Or am I over thinking this?
