True. Only the police can search with reasonable grounds.
Technically if they imposed themselves on you it is common assault - and they can be sued.

If your walking in the shop looking at the tools and then walking out again, i can see how that might look like you've taken something, but that still does not give them any right or reason to stop and search you if the alarm does not go off,

Next time I'd just point blank say No, if they try to detain you or grab your bag then you can do them for assault and sue them

the manager or whoever needs to learn the law. They have to observe you taking goods with no intent to pay, watch you leave the store before they can apprehend you and request you to accompany them back into the store to await the police. An alarm going off is not adequate indication to demand you return or have a look in your property, as someone else could have activated the alarm! However you need to remain calm an polite, determine their reason for stopping you, warn them of your intention to sue for false arrest and if they touch you in any way of assault! If they get it wrong their bum is on the line if you want to be a *******, ask the cops that turn up to arrest them for assault and see what happens, plod soon gets puzzled. Only know all this as I helped open the first few Lidls over here as a manager, however most of the thieving scumbags did resemble Phil
