Having a loft extension done round my house at the moment, and the builder has asked what we want the exterior of the dormer to be finished in. The dormer will be going down full length down the side of he house.

Originally we were going to have tile hanging but the builder has put the option forward of rendering it as he says it looks more modern. My only concern with that is our house is 100% brickwork and nothing else so would a rendered former look strange? (The misses likes the idea)

Drive around the locality until you have spotted some examples of both types of finish.

Ask the builder for the address of a property where he has applied the render so you can go and see for yourself.

I like modifications to houses to match as closely as possible the original.

White would match in with next door but does mean you will have to repaint every so often.

That’s a good point about matching next door. They reckon render doesn’t need any maintanence these days.

I spend my life doing loft conversions and generally we tile hang the dormers, no maintenance and matches the main roof. (35 yrs plus and probably 3 or 4 have been rendered) I'm assuming it's a flat roof dormer that's being built so I would go for slate grey plain tile hanging and white uPVC roofline plastic.
