Just had a call from a customer. Leaking rad, bought a new one, different size, needs to be fitted tomorrow as new carpets coming friday. I can move stuff around and fit it in tomorrow afternoon. So I ask is it open vented or sealed - don't know, but you'll have to drain down he says. More than likely I won't I say, oh yes you will. Ground floor rad, timber floor and fed from below.

Happy days.

do the job to his spec draining down etc. then charge him extra when you get air locks galore!

If the customer insists on paying you to drain down,so be it,why rock the boat,go with the flow (bad pun I know),at least that's the lecy bill paid this week:mickey:

Don't have to worry about it now. They've just phoned me to say their son has come in with a can of freeze spray, so won't be needing my services. Hope it's a big can :)

you'll probably get a call that will start HEEEEEELLLLLLPPPPPPP!

i usually just drain down to be safe in all fairness, but do use my bungs a fair amount, not into freezing kits, never used one so a bit wary although people on here love them, i am temted by one just not sure whats good etc :)

do they not take like 15 minutes though to freeze the pipe? saying that its another 15 minutes your getting paid

It's all about location, location, location. I still prefer to get a bunch of towels, a couple of sf stop ends and do it live. I only drain down as a last resort. But that's just me.

I'm already wound up by this.....

Why didn't they look into other options before giving you a call and making you re-arrange your diary.

Its got to be done now now now, oh, I don't need you now.

All calm with it now. It was good that it was the bloke that phoned originally, but then got his wife to phone me back. Could hear him in the background.

Not as good as the call friday night at 6.30 wanting two rads off before plasterer started on sunday (today), and told me it was only a ten minute job. :) :) :)

about same size as a big drill case , got it from the rothenberger reb £400 i think it was , used for about 2 years (borrowed my mates, but got my own early december) i tend to use compressions if there close but the closet ive soldered is about a meter. saved loads of times on it. just last week customer had fitted all new rads and pipe about 18 i think it was we simply frooze and put 2x 22 mm isolators on

im tempted mate very tempted, think ill have a look around at prices, like rothenberger stuff tbh

If the pictured kit is the Rothenberger EcoFreeze I've had it fail on me before whilst replacing a seized TRV on a heating system. Shut off the radiator at the lockshield side without problems so got this freezer out. Cleaned off the pipe below the TRV, put the freezer on till it started beeping (indicating pipe is frozen). Gently undo the TRV, all is good - a nice plug of ice.

No sooner had I got the TRV off than whoosh, out shoots the ice plug - pretty nearly hits the ceiling. Shortly followed by a 1 metre high plume of filthy black water. Of course, as the olive was still on all I could do was put the TRV back on to stop it leaking.

I can only assume that it doesn't work well on sludged central heating systems. Nonetheless that experience has made me stop using it completely as it was quite an embarrassing situation to be in to say the least.

Thank god I had a wet vac to clean up the carpet and painted wall. Even so I obviously lost a customer and it probably didn't help my reputation any.

This said, I've been able to solder within about 30cm of the ice plug on systems before without problems.
