Hi all,

I'm a newbie poster who has found the website very helpful for general advice and was hoping someone could offer some advice.

I'd like to add a Magnaclean type filter to the current set up, I appreciate the best place to add these is on the return to the boiler, however, my pipework is very close to the ceiling and runs along the entire floor to the airing cupboard (Photo 2) - return pipe according to install booklet is the right hand pipe without the drain off.

My issue is the airing cupboard is the only place (photo 1). I have drawn some numbers in to try and explain:

1. Is the location I think the Magnaclean can go.

2. Is what I believe is the boiler flow pipe going up to the pump and around to mark.1 - This pipe gets hot first when boiler is turned on.

3. These two pipes seem to run along the floor boards back to where the boiler seems to be located downstairs, (I say seem to as I cannot see beyond a small gap)

Thanks to anyone who has a moment to reply.

As you say yourself, the best place is in the return to the Boiler.
However, a filter in the system is better than no filter I suppose.
A filter on the return does not prevent everything from entering the Boiler first time around anyway.
Can you not alter that pipework above the Boiler to suit or is there something tot the right hand side of the Boiler?

Thanks, there's no space for more pipes as the boiler is next to a door opening to the right...would you have any views on the pipe marked 1 being a return?

Pipe 1 is a flow. Your return is the low level one with a drain valve.

I reckon you could fit a 28mm Spirotech on the return to the boiler. If it is the one with the drain off on in your second picture. The Spirotech could act as the drain off.

Thanks Phoenix, if pipe 1 is the flow this runs straight down to the horizontal pipe with the drain off at the bottom T.

Does this just loop round?! obviously I am missing something?

The loop you talk about is the bypass section, if you look, you can see an auto bypass between the flow and where it meets the return. Looks a tricky situation tbh as the return sits so low to the floor, the best diy option in this scenario may be to fit one to the flow.

Thanks UH, that makes sense, I'll probably go for an install on the flow then where originally shown. There isn't anywhere else I can see without re-doing the pipe work which I prefer to avoid!

I've read peoples comments about different filters, just prefer the Magna to the Spirotech..which unfortunately can't be installed on the horizontal pipe.

Cheers

You could move the pump up an I reckon you’d get a magnaclean on 2 before pump so that would be on flow straight from boiler

Thanks Savage, am I right in saying your suggestion is only so the external Grundfos pump is better protected? I may have to go with position 1 as this would be the quickest/easiest with just 2 cuts.

Speaking to Fernox and Adey, they suggest installing it and letting CH run and add F5 or other cleaner after this run so you clean up as you go along rather than disturbing everything in one go..

Thanks

It would be before pump an valves, your position one is on by-pass to return I would of thought this would be a less effective place to put it but I may be wrong

If you a
Tear the pipe where you have marked “3” ( the short bit that goes into the floor, with the lagging on . You could fit one there.
This is the combination of the hot water, and heating return.
So basically an extension of your boiler return.
Bit of alteration, but easy enough.

Edit!
Ignore my post, looks like the cylinder return must tee in under the floor.
