i assume you have checked the new cartridge for whether it is reverse thread? been caught out a few times with that on shower valves. Look at the new cartridge and see which way the threads go - although some makes changed during...

There lies the issue - they are under a solid oak floor glued and nailed to the floor boards underneath, not something I want to get that deeply involved with. a floor rip out is the last thing I need right now.
