Wondering if anyone can help please! 🙁

The current problem with our water is noticed mainly through hair-washing and showering. The water is not discoloured and has no smell however it has a slimy/waxy feel. When washing our hair, we have to shampoo it twice every time. Even after doing so it still leaves a waxy/unclean feel to the hair, almost like it was washed 2 days ago!

We are confident that our water problem is a plumbing issue of some sort as our local water board has confirmed that our mains cold water is fine. We have contacted several plumbers to try and diagnose the issue but no one seems to know what the problem is or does not want to help.

So here is the backstory.. We are experiencing the current problem with our hot water after having our water cylinder replaced. We replaced our water cylinder due to the previous one being faulty, the heating coil was leaking inhibitor into the water. This previously presented a different problem with the water; it had an oily sheen to it, a chemical smell and was also discoloured. It was found that there was a pinhole in the cylinder heating coil causing the leak.

For a short period of time, whilst we were waiting to have a new cylinder fitted, the water feed was re-routed and we used the immersion switch to heat the water. During this time we experienced no problems whatsoever with our water when showering. It appeared to solve the problem completely! But only temporary because as soon as we replaced the cylinder with a brand new one, we experienced a whole different issue, which has obviously carried on to this day.

We are at a complete loss of how to sort this problem, does anyone have any ideas or experience as to what this could be??

Surely it's not another fault with the tank as it feels like a separate issue?! I have contacted the tank manufacturer and they have suggested getting the hot water tested, I am currently trying to source a company to do this.

Any help is appreciated, thank you

You can find an accredited lab that will test your water via the UKAS site:

Give the lab a call before placing an order. If you tell them the problem they will advise you what type of test(s) might help. I'll be surprised, however, if there is anything wrong with water other than, possibly, being rather hard.

There are many medical conditions that can affect how wet skin 'feels'. My own hands and fingers, for example, get noticeably sticky when wet. This, my doctor tells me is a side-effect of some medication I'm on. So, if you've had the water tested you might wish to discuss the symptoms with your doctor.

I have contacted a lab and they have asked me what I would like to tested for, which I obviously have no idea! They cannot advise so have suggested reaching out to a local water authority, environmental agency or DWI.
It is definitely not a medical condition because the rest of my family started experiencing the same problems with their hair as soon as the cylinder was changed.

thank you for your help
