water pump with back boiler question

Thirty years ago I did a number of police houses. Most were converted from Parkray solid fuel boilers to oil but a couple of coppers wanted a new Parkray put in. The trick with getting the rads hot is to put the pump on slowest speed then screw down a lockshield or circuit valve on the flow or...

Are these unvented HW tanks? Also, how does the CoP stack up for getting the higher temps for hot water? I know GSHPs have higher CoP than ASHP but presumably it would go down as the outlet temperature goes up. As for energy losses by having the cylinders nearer the points of use, depends on how...

    underfloor heating not working upstairs

Manufacturer went bust some years ago I think. Looks like the problem is in the zone valve but as suggested see if it's actually getting a supply on to motor it open before replacing, could be lack of supply from the timeswitch or thermostat or whatever is controlling it.

    underfloor heating not working upstairs

Mixing valve u/s? If the pump's running and there's water in the system could be the valve is stuck but not a normal problem. What about any zone valves? I take it your system looks like this one...

black or blue label...does it matter?

All changed a few years ago to standardise across europe. Now do it by hardness and thickness. Usual is R250 half hard, a certain thickness is same as Table X.

    underfloor heating not working upstairs

What sort of UF system is it? Does each manifold have its own pump? If there's just the one manifold doing upstairs could it be power supply/fuse on manifold control board? More info please.

    Cold Radiators in Loft

Is there a pressure gauge somewhere on the system you could check?

    Air in system

Two faults: as mentioned above you need vents to get rid of the air around the 3 way valve and there also appears to be an unvented high point on the return from the cylinder. Assuming the cold feed and vent are the two pipes coming in on the suction side of the pump I don't think any changes...

    Air in system

It sounds like your pump is on the return to the boiler? Is the cold feed also on the return and the vent on the flow if it's old skool? You mentioned pipes in the roof so not far below the F&E tank? Not knowing the exact layout of your system it sounds like the pump is drawing in air, possibly...

How to remove thermostat and just have timer

Usually external controls are tied into the timeswitch/thermostat terminals. Looks like link 4 & 5 to bring it on.

    The new radiator

You can get interesting stuff on commercial as well: had a fire once at a school, not due to our work but I was sorting out a contract on site when some yobbos torched the science lab prep room one weekend. Main hot water pipes ran through the ceiling back to the boiler room next door. The fire...

    ASHP or Oil boiler

Quite agree. This one came from a well-known national firm of mechanical consultants and when the information about the system came from the manufacturers that was when we queried the temperatures. Obviously if you can improve the insulation to reduce the fabric heat losses then even better...

    Oil tank pump

In what way? Is this to remove it from a full tank or once drained?

    Bend it

I've used hydraulic benders up to 2" iron. When I was a lad (!!!) the fitter who was old skool had to bend some 3" so he got a load of sand, packed the piece of pipe with it and capped the ends, then gave it some serious heat for ages until it was glowing in the middle and bent it with a set of...

    Tds meter readings

Normally only bother with TDS on steam systems to make sure you aren't getting buildups of stuff from the condensate. I suppose it's becoming more relevant now with modern boilers having such small waterways and the emphasis on pump performance etc.

    New install

I take it this is a combi boiler? What's likely to be drawing hot water at once? Depends on pressure but you're limited by the flow through the boiler and the heat input so would probably keep it at 15mm. Also means you don't have to run gallons of cold water off before the hot comes through...

    ASHP or Oil boiler

Have just finished a commercial ASHP install of about 100kW in a new build with UFH. A few lessons learned: ASHPs usually quote CoPs etc for certain outside temps, in our case it was 7C. When we challenged the suppliers to give us a setup which would cope with the design conditions (-3C outside...

    Check valves on existing showers

I'm surprised the shower valves don't have check valves built in. AFAIK all the ones we used to put in came with them already fitted, but that might have been a manufacturers' option.

    2 Keston C40's

White waste pipe. That was one thing Kestons made a big point of when they came out that you could use ordinary plastic drain pipe for flues. Did a commercial job in an old folks home with 100mm grey soil pipe.
