Hi All,

I am in the process of renovating a property and have the floorboards up installing cabling etc, however it is the plumbing that I have to question and would like some advice if possible.

The issue has been bugging me for ages as the house is my later fathers and I have always wondered why from the vaillant 831 ecotec plus there are 22mm copper flow and return pipes that then step up to 28mm copper pipes that run almost the full length of the house that are reduced back to 22mm where the hot water tank used to be located to then supply heating throughout the property via 15mm pipework.

Having done some research I have found that 28mm was used to supply hot water from the tank via 28mm pipes due to better flow on a gravity fed systems and so my question is more around efficiency.

The flow and return have approximately 6m each of 28mm copper pipes that at each end are either reduced back to 22mm where the combi is located and again where the hot water tank was once located.

While the only issue I have experienced is the need to balance the system to ensure certain radiators are working my question is more to do with efficiency as while there is 6m of 28mm copper pipe in the middle of the system on both the flow and return is the heating less efficient?

I guess the plumber just used existing pipework by reducing to 22m in various locations, although while I have the floorboards up I was simply wondering do it rip out the 28mm and replace with 22mm?
