2nd RIDDOR in as many months

Life is never dull as a gas tech that's for sure.

Got a call from a prospective client (i'd done an estimate for them a while back, unrelated works) saying that they had had the chimney upstairs removed and replaced with a new duct within the floor by a local builder (alarm bells are ringing in my head at this point). Trouble is now when they use the gas fire below they can smell burning plastic! 'SWITCH IT OFF' I politely requested, I'm on my way

Turns out that the removed chimney had been substituted with a 4 x 2 wc type plastic extract duct terminating on the outside wall with a 4" plastic louvred vent. I counted 4 NCS's, 1 AR, and an ID as I considered the smell to be evidence of distress

not sure, the job was in Essex but I've since discovered that the builder's name is registered in coventry, I suspect (but don't know for sure) that it's a bogus company trading off of someone elses good reputation, it'll be down to the client and hse to pursue

no one likes a grass (if that's what you're driving at) but these are peoples lives we're talking about and I couldn't give two iotas whether submitting a RIDDOR makes me unpopular with anyone on or off this forum, these people are my clients and I owe them my very best abilities, there's a little more going on with the works that the builder has done but this is no place to discuss it.

As far as the individual elements that made me submit the RIDDOR I've only cited the count for the ammusement value, to the forum members and my fellow independent traders. I'm sorry that this has upset you but when you work all day on your tod sometimes it's nice to share your experiences with others in a similar position.

There are some people in this world who are beyond 'chats' & 'words of advice' and need locking up & this is quite clearly one. You'd be neglecting in your duties as a human being let alone a gas engineer to report this & there's not one right minded person that would think anything but agree with this option...people like this kill families & rather have a riddor on my conscience than an eternity of sleepless nights knowing something happened because of my reluctance to report. RIDDOR= saving lives and protecting the professionalism and standing of gas engineering as a career. If the useless ones are routed out,then that discourages undercutting and undermining of our status (if any !) and income.

...well I'm a bit of soft touch, these very decent people were proper done over! I know what you mean, there's always risk in giving free advice and customer care but the good news is I start the remedials on their plumbing on Tuesday, their heating on Wednesday then they want a quote on re-fluing the fire, so in this case it turns out ok

fair play! cant for the life of me understand how people like this dodgy builder dont care for human life!? you done the right thing but i also would have charged them for what you done only enough to cover your own costs and explained that to them too otherwise its end up costing you money(excluding the work your doing for them now)

oh don't get me wrong I'm not the cheapest by a long chalk in a very competitive area. I'm a relatively fledgling business and referals to me have triple the value than advertising does, if these clients recommend me to just one other person I'll see my time investment as worthwhile, these are tough times, sometimes you have to go the extra mile!

I think you had no choice 'shorticus' regards RIDDOR ... In 33yrs I've RIDDORed twice, both builders, one the occupants were hospitalised! Maybe its in most builders remit to know a little about a lot but there are some that think they know it all! ALAS!

I keep banging on to my customers about the importance of an annual service on their inset, a boiler service for most people is a given but they’ll drill you to justify an hour and half’s rate for something that ‘I hardly use’, scary really, seen some real shockers in the last year.

Business has been manic to be honest ... To many people have my number!! LOL ..... A lot of installers pass on my number for repairs so the phone has been a bit hot the past week or two.

Not complaining mind but I'm having to work 5 days a week now and it just isn't on !!! 🙂

Hey, some of my eastern European friends are really well trained. Some, tho just make it up on the fly. Just like us Brits.
