Hi,

Any advice on the following problem would be gratefully received.

I have an old house from 1959 and have started to get problems with my radiators. There was one rad that was temperamental but the 'disease' seems to have spread and I now have six of my 14 rads that are cold.

There are 10 downstairs of which 5 have no heat at top or bottom and one that is still cold but a degree or two warmer than the others. There are four upstairs all working fine.

I have done the only bit of plumbing I know and bleed all the rads but one of them produced any air. I thought it might be sludge, but most articles seems to imply that the top will still get hot.

I have uploaded an image with the working rads in red and cold ones in blue. Any ideas?

Thanks and regards
BarneyJoe

Could be sludge in the radiators. Only way to check that out well is to get a radiator removed and flushed and refitted. Any thermostatic radiator valves can have the pin below the head jammed - a few taps on the pin can free them for a while.
Circulating pumps can fail partially and tend to not heat the hardest to circulate around radiators - furthest away or any downstairs drops

Thanks for the response and I'll get someone in to have a look as it sounds outside of my skillset!

As above, also you never mentioned what system you have system or combi, probably system at a guess, make sure all valves are open properly then try balancing rads.

Turn off the ones that are working. It might kick the others into life

Thanks very much and that seems to have helped for the moment. Any ideas on the underlying problem?

Sorry Sheedy, the boiler is a worcester greenstar ri. T'internet says it's not a combi.
I will look up balancing rads as I've never done it before, is it easy to do for a noob like me?
