hi guys, new to the forum and hoping for a bit of advice really.

at the moment i am a youth worker but am hoping to train as a plumber alongside my present job. i have read a lot of the posts on the forum involving the changes to the 6129 and the new diploma and am aware that full guidelines of the new course are still a bit unknown, what i was wondering was what is the best route for me to train.

my impression of the 6129 is that after it's completion i could work self employed but wouldn't be 'qualified' until i get the nvq 2, where as the new diploma course requires you to be working for someone first. is this right?

i am aware that the nvq system is going but what i was hoping to do was to carry on in my present job to support my family etc and train on the side over a few years, then go out self employed doing small jobs as well as little things for friends family etc for about 5 years until i could afford to switch to plumbing full time and am worried that i won;t then be able to do this on the new diploma.
would trying to do the 6129 this year before it ends be a better option for my situation and then do a bridging course to be 'qualified' if one will exist, in the future? or are all hopes of training whilst continuing working on my current job out the window with the new course plans?

little confused about best option at the moment as still definitely need to continue on at my present job so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

cheers,

Jon

Hi jon, Why do you want to be a plumber? The market is soaking wet at the minute thats the only problem , second problem is that you have a family to support. If you are going self employed doing small jobs only for 5 years straight after training why are quals important to you? Can't say I would recommend training to be plumber at the moment to be honest you would be lucky if you made 10 grand a year first few years full time especially with a family. Good luck with it if you do it though mate. 😉

in short mate nobody really knows which will be the best options at the moment, new quals not alot of work, difficult to give advice
