Hello everyone.

I'm currently attending college and coming to the end of my first year of my 2 day a week plumbing course.
My family convinced me it would be a good idea to earn a trade and it sounded a good idea. But after reading
all of the posts on here I'm not so sure I've made the right decision !!

I need to decide whether to carry on or look elsewhere. I've only found one apprenticeship where I got an interview and I got to the last 4 and the job went to a boy a year older than me who had done a year more at college. I'm not even bothered about a wage as I am lucky enough to have a very supportive family but just cannot find anything.

Sorry if you've heard all this before but would appreciate some guidance / advice from people in trade.

Thanks in advance and appreciate your time reading this.

Danny

you can look for apprenticeships on here https://apprenticeshipvacancymatchingservice.lsc.gov.uk/
and try signing up to JTL for apprenticeships also.

your at the age where i would be looking for a employer as your free to send to college. goodluck mate.

sorry to hear about your job interview sucks... ive been lucky only had 2 interviews with 2 heating firms and got both the jobs lol. but the hard part is getting the interview so your doing well so far.

as a young un whos is doing it right , it may be hard to swallow that some are doing it quicker and earning more ( lie ) . stick at it you will out see these and they will soon be driving a taxi or stacking shelves

Advice from a grumpy old man from Alloa, Scotland.

It's not all doom and gloom pal. Stick in really hard at what you're doing and you'll get there in the end. Congrats for actually wanting to go out in the big wide world and actually do something with your life. Many kids your age are content with just signing on and living on benefits.

Thanks for that. Never seen the JTL website before i'll have a look.

I think I'm going to have to widen my search to anything and carry on on my college course, I'm not going to just give up and sit at home. That's not going to get me anywhere.

Danny

Hi Danny you need to look at firms working in town (London) there is still work going on. It means travelling in but it is buzzing & lots of girls working in the offices.
O' I remember it well!!!.

Good luck & keep trying.

Hmm!

Do not get upset by knock backs you will get plenty of those. The construction industry is geared up for people changing jobs. At one time they paid "holiday stamps" which your company stamped for your holiday entitlements. The idea being that each time you got a different job you took your holiday money with you so that when you went on holiday you had money to go. In those days many companies seemed to want to only pay holidays after working for them for twelve months, many construction workers where fortunate to get twelve weeks work with the same company, so they would loose their holidays without the stamps.

So you have to get accustomed to getting knock backs as you look for work. Its not always like that of course. Keep trying, it can be a great and exciting life in construction, a bit like being in the army.

as anything in life you`ve got to really want to do it ,if thats the case dont let anything put you off

Hi danny, you have done 12mths training as a Plumber now ! so how do you feel about this as a Trade ? do you feel that you want to stay doing this, or are you thinking I would rather try somthing else, its not a bad job and you can make a fair liveing doing it, but if you have doubts about it, then try somthing else wile your young enough change direction, God luck in what evre you decide to do.

My Mrs comes from Hornchurch. I know that doesn't help you in anyway but I felt the need to mention it. Good luck fella.

oit! im an essex girl! nothin wrong with essex... thanks to TOWIE, were all meant to be orange with wigs!

Hey! if you think being an Essex girl is thought a bit rough. Try being a Scouser male or female! We are treated like the nations outcasts. Mind you we do say "We are in England but not part of it!" on a big signboard in the city centre. We are thought ignorant, stupid, light fingered, violent, gaol birds and they are only the nice things people say about us. 🙂 🙂

O dear Bernie its just another cross to bear, on top of all your other problems, by the way how is it now ?, not so infected ??, those antibiotics are a wonderful thing aren't they !!! :46:

danny, just tried to reply to you but i got an error saying you inbox is too ful and wont accept my message.

Me too lol.
Nowt wrong with Hornchurch other than changing the 'White Hart' to a poncy pub.
More Upminster Bridge myself when the Optimist used to be a proper pub.

Hi,

Go to the national apprenticeships website, register and then start looking for apprenticeships in your area. Failing that, try your careers centre, they might have lists of apprenticeships. Go to local firms, put a suit on and impress them , ask for experience/work. Keep going you'll get there!
