How much would you charge to fit a mixer shower, pipework is accessible & would need approx 1.5m runs. No previous shower installed so I just need to T into existing pipework & run down for mixer,I don't particularly want the job as when I visited the property the guy told me he already had a good plumber but he has gone vat (ie legitimate tax etc etc) as am I...?! Sometimes you get a feeling that you should decline a job...

Simples, obviously your not to fussed with the job. Work out materials and time to do job. Decide on an hourly rate minimum of £35 p/h and bingo.

My instincts are screaming no, but I'm not sure how to say no politely to the custard without jeopardizing my reputation?

Can't work for someone who 'already has a good plumber'! Sorry but I'm not willing to be 2nd best just cos his'mate' is more expensive. No matter how much tea & bacon sarnies!

Quote the figure that you feel is right plus say 50% plus VAT with 50% up front.

Should he say yes remember that instinct of yours so you can still have a three month lead time which should deliver the message.

Worst he can say about you not getting the job is you were too busy, you would be surprised how many people would see him as being an idiot if he said his reason was you are VAT registered and insured.
