It all depends on the house and where I'm cutting. You can have an educated guess by having a look around the property, pipe runs, location of boiler and hot water tank, plug sockets etc for cable runs. From there it will either be a jigsaw or the plunge saw.

are any pipes or wires - then find the two joists mark out nice square - set circular saw to

They arnt the Thorncliffe by any chanceThere is an estate round my way about 10ish year old that has the chipboard bonded to the fabricated joists. Every board that crosses a joist has to be destroyed to lift it and obviously replaced with a new board when the work is done

Personally I think it's good that the builders glue them down, from a buyers perspective, not a plumbers. It stops them creaking
