If I'm reading you right desrob it'll show 24vdc untill it opens then it'll show 0vdc as the switch makes. Before switch 24vdc one side and zero the other will read 24vdc difference between the two points. Switch makes gives you 24vdc either side which means the difference read by the multi meter will be ovdc .. Does that make sense?

perfect sense,i have no spark on a compact he 25 vokera,i do not seem to have 240 v ac at gas valve
 
The aps on these are prone desrob as is the venturi. They usually fire great with the case off then not when back on!
