Anyone Recommend Hand Pump For Cisterns And Tanks?

View the thread, titled "Anyone Recommend Hand Pump For Cisterns And Tanks?" which is posted in UK Plumbers Forums on UK Plumbers Forums.

You know the situation. Go to change a bottom entry Float valve, turn water off, flush bog, but there's always a few inches of water left in the bottom of the cistern. Similar with loft tanks, but easier to clear the last bit of water with them.

What I really need is a small hand pump to get the last bit of water out, quickly, and without flooding the place when you remove the float valve.

What do others use?

with a bog use a sponge takes @ 3 mins with a tank use a jug bail it into a bucket @ 5 mins still want a pump?

you could use this OMNS100A.jpga battery operated syphon, costs under £20

I turn water to cistern off, but don't flush, as it is easier to syphon with short hose nearly tight to base of cistern. Then, just a small drop of water to dry out.
TBO, I would prefer a pump or something, maybe wet vac, as I don't want to waste time or risk getting cistern water in my mouth, or white bleach from those tablets, that once nearly blew my head off - not exaggerating! Lol!

95% of the time I get wet vac out first, if it's friday night and cant be bothered to get wet vac, get a bucket and push float valve down whilst undoing, then quickly pull float valve out and let the water trickle into bucket, however would not advice as can be a wet job.

maplin have 2 hand siphon pumps...yes two! in a pack for 2.99 cheap and cheerful. does the job too

just get one of those drain blasters with handle instead of pushin try pulling get from toolstation bout £3 use mine every day ideal when tnt has a bloo loo sucks this up also leaves a few mm in btm then get sponge but if their mingers use the floor and mop it up!!

Sounds like fun. What ratio of white bleach tablets to water do you recommend for best effect WITHOUT blowing one's head off? Must be cheaper than skunk!

I've become a wet vac convert since seeing people rave about them on here. Previous to that I was flushing, then draining the remnant through the float valve port with a ice cream tub (yum)

Lol! Wasn't fun, - the tablet must have disintegrated & was invisible to me, & as luck would have it, it happened to be a time I got a mouthful! Had to immediately drink milk, which is what you are supposed to do. Don't think I swallowed any bleach, but burned the throat. A lesson learned, & the same with heating oil, - use something other than your mouth to start syphon!
