With the poor quality washers you get now,you need to add a good silicon or lsx to the joints
not only does this make a good joint but also when silicon goes off it helps hold joint in place, especially the bath overflow that gets pulled about and has plastic threads
However there is using silicon and using silicon
Just smear, very lightly over washers(if you imagine wetting your fingure with water and rubbing onto washer, this is the same amount of silicon to use) and thread and the do up hand tight, then add silicon to outside of joint on outer side of bath, this helps stop any future movement
You have to be careful using silicon on rubber washers as to much will allow rubber washer to distort, but only if over tightened, often now you will find a small plastic ridge around fitting,to help against washer distortion
As regards bath seals, there are tools, but the best way is using your fingers, the main thing people do wrong is apply to much, when running the bead along bath, just apply a thin bead,do not cut nozzel to big,it should be about 4mm,when you run along bath just do one long steady run,do not stop to fill exta gaps or indents, these can be added to afterwards, just run a steady, equal amount, then make sure your figure is wet and kept wet and then push in bead to surfaces as required ,any bits that are not sealed correctly can be then added to,to keep fingure wet,you can keep clean with tissue then spit of have a small jar of water with washing up liquid in it
