Ive got a customer with a baxi solo 3 80 I think. It seems its overheating, circulation in the system all seems fine. They report that it starts loud banging and dumps a load of water out the open vent a few times a day. I quickly popped round and it would not overheat. They said the overheat light on the front never comes on when it shuts down apparently and has never needed resettting, but the boiler on light goes off sometimes??? Im sure these have a permanent live and shouldnt this be on all the time? It was all ok when I was there. I didnt really have a proper look at the boiler as it was all boxed in and awkward to get to. So I didnt check burner pressures or anything.

Any Ideas?? I am thinking the boiler stat could be knackered, but the "boiler on" light going out is puzzling me.

Check the wiring. They'll do this if wired without a permanent live. I've seen it a few times when some one has done a boiler swap and not upgraded the wiring.

Does the boiler have a pump overrun facility, I'd assume yes considdering it requires the pump wiring into it and a perminant live connection. Without pump overrun there's the potential for latent heat to boil the water in the heatexchanger 'mfgs' 🙂

No permanent live would explain the light going out once it has reached temperature as there is no power feed from the switch live? With no permanent live then the pump overrun wont work either.

This seems like the most likely cause. Any other suggestions? I want to be armed with as much info as possible before going back to the job.

Should the "boiler on" light, constantly be on? Or does it just signal a demand?
