Hi all. First time using this forum. Here Goes: Noticed overflow pipe running from header tank in loft at my sons property. On checking part 1 ball valve slight leak from washer. Bent valve arm and stopped leak but I will be upgrading to new part 2 ballvalve in near future. Decided to check mains stopcock working but seized solid so will attempt to free or replace asap. Noticed rising main is a black poly pipe into stopcock. I was expecting to see MDPE. Is this an imperial pipe? and can i fit 15mm stopcock to this. When doing some plumbing way back in the property I remember some copper pipes were imperial and I had to use adaptor olives.

Alkathene pipe, make sure you get the correct fittings before cutting, pipe wall thickness can vary as well so right insert is essential 🙂

plasson black to blue coupler with copper set. No insert required. Philmac make one also.

best solution is to fit a new stop tap above the existing one, or service the existing.

many thanks for info. I am going to try to free off existing stopcock. If unable to do this I will cut in a new philmac UTC stopcock above it. Now need to check the external stopcock works. (Got a feeling it wont) and will have to get local water company to replace it before I can shut off water and complete works. I guess only other option is to freeze pipe but do not really want to do this.

Could this not be HDPE pipe? Please forgive my naivety, but I'm sure I read that HDPE was black, which is generally superseded by blue MDPE now.

Usually fit a Philmac 20mm coupler no insert required on imperial pipe and then 20/15 copper adaptor in other side.
