Got home today to a bill from south staffs water for £205, 4x as much as usual! Nowt wrong internally, listening stick put on mains under stopcock - nothing, and checked the external meter isn't going round when nothing is being used - it's not. There's no way we've been using quadruple the amount of water for the last three months. Now I've worked for Homeserve for the last three years and we work with the water boards and have been out to countless numbers of these jobs for customers in the exact same boat, no signs of any escape of water internally and no signs of a WSP problem.

They're getting a stern phone call on Monday as to me it stinks of a money grabbing exercise, anyone got any advice?

If you've a push button we, then check that the syphon isn't passing. Seen it loads of times with water running down the back of the loo.

You would see the water meter spinning with any water use though.

More than likely estimated bills before like said. Or just an error by them.

Probably only been estimated bills the last 2 or 3 times.

They've read the meter this time and have found you've
been under charged and brought account up to date.

I got caught out on that when I was younger. The gas bill was less than I hoped so we used the heating that little bit more then the massive bill came!

Sometimes it can only pass a small amount which is barely visible to the eye so the meter will hardly turn unless you watch it for 10 minutes or so.
