I would just knock off the mains drain tank, fit new lever valve on cylinder cold feed and change taps. Makes life easier.
Watch out for the dreaded 'air locks' lol
Oh no a favour, worst type of job. Just remember no good deed goes unpunished 🙂
Bung the feed but not the vent. Just be aware it could let go whenever it likes.i have to bung a tank to change some taps on a job tomorrow as there is no gate valve on the feed. I've heard horror stories of imploding cylinders. How does this happen and how is it avoidable? Should I bung the feed tapping only at the tank and not the open vent?

I always use bungs on these types of jobs, customers love no wasted water plus I love no air locks!
Worst case you could fit bung, open hot water tap & cut a lever valve in on the tank outlet!
I use the monument screw in bungs
ive got the regin ones, only ever used them on f & e tanks for changing rad valves. you think one will hold in a cwsc under the weight of the water in it? its only for a few minutes until ive cut a ballafix in?
Bung the feed & leave the vent open tho...
I have always used Champaign corks to bung cisterns and tanks.
Champaign corks are made of the highest quality and do not disintegrate. These can be rasped or filed to a sharp point for bunging. When removing cylinders, Champaign corks fit nicely into 1inch primaries to prevent sludge spills, when carting away.
