Hi guys,
Wonder if you can provide some suggestions.
When my heating comes up, the pipes go wild and make a lot of noise. I presume this is because of expansion/contraction phenomenon. I know of 2 places where the noise comes from and they are where the pipes come down from ceiling into the hallway and into our lounge. The return and feed pipes are close to each other and have size 22 mm i believe.

Now, the pipes in our hallway come down in the corner from the celiing through a picture frame. The pipes are touching the wood and making a bit of noise. What can i do to resolve this noise? Please help. Can i use some felt or lagging? I want it to look hidden or not easily visible fix though.

Thank you.

There are two types of banging noise from a heating system:

1) Boiler kettling. This is due to local hot spots in a boilers heat exchanges which result in bubbles of steam that make a banging noise when they collapse.

2) Noise associated with movement due to thermal expansion and contraction,. This can be any of a variety of noises including bangs, groans and ticking.

If the problem is Boiler Kettling then this must be resolved as it can cause damage to the boiler heat exchanger.

If it is the movement of pipes etc as you suspect then you can wrap the pipe in felt were the pipe passes over joists or sleeve it through holes to reduce noise. It will depend on what is making the noise as to the best method or stopping it

try putting some Hessian between the pipes where visible or any thing just to eliminate noise sadly if hessian or simler hasent been placed between the joists on the main cercs it may be difficult to get access
